Program Note
Mozart, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach all had excellent musical training and abundant talent, yet somehow they also had serious career problems. Emanuel Bach was treated dismissively and paid wretchedly by Frederick the Great, and Mozart clashed famously with Archbishop Colloredo, which resulted in his being quite literally booted from his job in Salzburg. Friedemann Bach, on the other hand, seems to have been a problem employee, whose "difficult character and unsteady way of life" led to years of job-hopping and financial distress. Listening to these elegant, buoyant sonatas, however, one would never suspect that their lives were anything but perfect.

Artists Notes
Wilbert Hazelzet and Jacques Ogg's musical partnership is well-documented through recordings on Glossa Music, Harmonia Mundi and others. Wilbert Hazelzet has dedicated himself exclusively to the baroque flauto traverse for over three decades. As one of the leading baroque flautists, he performs recitals in cooperation with harpsichordist and fortepianist Jacques Ogg, and with lutenist Konrad Jungh Enel. He is principal flautist for the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. and a regular guest soloist with The Sonnerie Ensemble - Monica Huggett, Music for Awhile Ensemble London - Margareth Faultless and the Passamezzo Trio Bilbao. Mr. Hazelzet teaches at The Royal Conservatory The Hague and the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in Holland.

Lyra Artistic Director Jacques Ogg is a performer on both harpsichord and fortepiano. His current activities include solo concerts on harpsichord or on fortepiano, concerts with flautist Wilbert Hazelzet as a duo as well as in a trio formation, either with viol player Jaap ter Linden or with 'cellist Christiaan Norde. He teaches at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, is a member of The Orchestra of the 18th Century and performs regularly with Concerto Palatino. Mr. Ogg is frequently invited for master classes in Juiz de Fora (Brazil), Buenos Aires, Mateus (Portugal), and Salamanca (Spain) as well as in Cracow (Poland), Prague, and Budapest. He has been Lyra's Artistic Director for the last three seasons.

Grants from the McKnight Foundation, the James R. Thorpe Foundation and the Metropolitan Arts Council help to support Lyra's 2005-2006 season.
