Antonio Soler: 5 Villancicos (1769)
The Lyra Baroque Orchestra, directed by Jacques Ogg, with María Luz Álvarez, Raquel Andueza, Jordi Domènech, Joan Cabero, and the Escolanía del Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
Villancicos are Spanish cantatas which were intended for a popular ("farmers, townspeople, merchants, etc.") audience. They are in the vernacular and tell stories in a friendly, sometimes amusing fashion. These five villancicos describe five popular stories about the nativity and were intended by Soler to speak to the common folk and to draw them into the life and celebrations of the royal monastery, El Escorial. They are delightful stories with delightfully entertaining music. Each of the villancicos is preceded by liturgical propers from the Christmas season, sung by the men's schola of El Escorial.
The recording was produced by Glossa, a Spanish label which specialized in period instrument performance. The recording was made in Antonio Soler's chapel, a very short distance from a cloistered passage where one can find his tomb. The recording opens up a chapter in the life of El Escorial de San Lorenzo, full of monks, town folk, and peasants, celebrating Christmas in 1769 in the courtyards and chapel of the monastery.
