Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Concerto for flute, strings and basso continuo in d- minor H.425.

Georg Philipp Telemann: Ouverture "La Putain"

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Concerto for flute, strings and bass continuo in A major H.438.

From Bach we have a pair of fine flute concerti written for Frederick the Great of Prussia, a proficient player and patron of the arts, but also something of an ingrate. He found Bach's style too intense and overwrought, and treated him as a B-list composer for years. Fortunately, posterity has better taste than Frederick. One wonders whether Telemann had anyone specific in mind when he was writing the suite titled La Putain (a French term translated most tactfully as "The Adventuress"); lice, snails, peasants, cousins, and witches also figure in this lively set of dances.
